ACCOLADES

PlayStation Accolades was a launch-day feature available on PS5 that was sunset in 2022.

Typically player review features are built into individual games (i.e. Overwatch’s Endorsement feature). The main goal of the Accolades feature was to provide a delightful review experience for games across an entire system.

In this case, Accolades could be accessed in-between multiplayer online matches. From the in-game UI, you could send another player in your match an accolade & award them for their most recent gameplay.

I took over Accolades in 2021. Engagement was fairly low with this feature due to the entry points being different & inconstent from game to game. Shortly after I became design lead, I shipped a fully-redesigned Accolades experience that improved many of the pain points players were finding in the Day 1 launch experience.

After the redesign shipped, accolades saw a drastic increase in user engagement. Unfortunately, that increase came about 2 years too late, and the feature was ultimately sunset in order to focus resources towards larger, more successful Day 1 experiences.

Patterns and components that were piloted with the Accolades redesign have since been used to push larger, holistic UX improvements for other features on the platform that were present at launch, including PS5 Activities.
